Support Our Neighborhood Grocery!

Walnut Hills may lose its grocery store on McMillan Street. Krogers says that unless
it can renegotiate a more favorable lease with the owner of the property, or sales increase dramatically, the store is likely to close.

Should a new lease be negotiated, Kroger management is interested in receiving input from
neighborhood businesses and residents about how to increase community use of the store and maintain a vibrant presence in the neighborhood.

A neighborhood grocery is important for current residents, the business district, and future development in our area!
Please call 1-800-KROGERS with your questions or comments.

Protect Your Business from Metal Theft

With the rising price and the high demand of copper, there is a nationwide increase in copper theft. Thieves target copper wire, pipe, fittings and other components such as commercial and residential air condition units, or power stations containing copper. Rooftop AC units are vulnerable because they are not readily in view. While copper is certainly a primary target, brass and steel thefts are also on the rise.

Lieutenant Gary M. Brown, Investigative Unit Commander of Distric Four offers these tips:

1. Conduct a risk assessment of your property

2. Add DANGER signs

3. Post in your business window a contact number to report suspicious activity to

4. Mark your property with trace coating of paint or tape

5. Utilize fencing, razor wire or steel bar type caging to protct your air conditioner

6. Use motion detector lighting and alarms

7. Check your property often

8. Attend community and business association meetings

9. Email groups of people to help spread the word

Alexandra Apartments

The Alexandra Apartments, a 99-year-old historical landmark, offers 83-unit affordable rental housing development for seniors.

The Alexandra Apartments is a four-story apartment complex on the southeast corner of Gilbert Avenue and Taft Road in Walnut Hills. It was completed in 1904 and is named after Alexandra Moore, the daughter of John J. Emery, who along with Thomas J. Emery developed the property. Joseph G. and Bernard F. Steinkamp of Cincinnati were the architects. The building’s architecture is a mix of stylistic details, mostly American Colonial Revival, which set a new trend in design. Outstanding features include three large wings that project from the main axis of the building. It has a large, decorative north main facade, which exhibits a one-story frontispiece of smooth rectangular stone columns, highlighted by capitals with egg and dart molding and a full stone entablature. The building attracted middle-income families from 1904 until the late 1960s. It was devastated by fire in 1993, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, and condemned by the city in 1998. For ten years the building has slowly deteriorated until the complex restoration was recently completed.
The $12.7 million restoration includes four studio, 64 one-bedroom, and 15 two-bedroom apartments. All of the apartments, which feature high ceilings, range in size from 386 square feet to 968 square feet and are reserved for seniors earning up to 60 percent of the area median income, or $27,000 for one person; $30,840 for two people; and $34,740 for three people. Five of the apartments are constructed for people with physical disabilities, and are accessible by two elevators. The Alexandra Apartments offers a community room, laundry facilities, a social service program, a nurse’s station, a library for residents’ use, and is located in the heart of the Walnut Hills business district, adjacent to the Kroger grocery store and METRO bus transportation.
